Counterbalance / Contrapeso

2019

Sound piece

Counterbalance / Contrapeso is a sound composition constructed from dozens of edited dialogues extracted from films, all circling around gestures of invitation, negotiation, hesitation, and encounter. The repeated phrases “would you dance with me?” become fragmented attempts to establish connection, voices continuously trying, failing, insisting, and reaching toward one another.Through repetition, interruption, and accumulation, the piece reflects on the fragility of relational balance and on the impossibility of existing in isolation. Listening becomes an embodied experience of dependency, proximity, and tension, where meaning emerges not from individual voices, but from their continuous interaction. The work approaches interdependence as both emotional and ecological condition. Much like ecosystems, which rely on unstable yet neces- sary relations between different forms of life, the composition suggests that existence itself is structured through negotiation, reciprocity, and mutual vulnerability. Rather than proposing harmony or resolution,

Counterbalance / Contrapeso foregrounds the continuous effort required to sustain connection, between bodies, voices, environments, and forms of coexistence.
